Start a room
- On the home page, open Room settings if you want a password or want guests to add videos or play the next one. Passwords need at least four characters.
- Select Create room. Choose a nickname and a preset or custom avatar color, then join. A new room does not reuse your previous room's nickname.
- Paste an individual YouTube video URL above the player and select Add video. The first video starts the queue. Copy room link copies only the current URL; send it to your friends. Send the password separately if you set one.
Join and use the room
Open the invitation, set your room profile and enter the password when asked. No ViewTalk or Google account is required by this app. A restricted video may still refuse to play in the embed.
Playback starts automatically where the browser permits it. If audio autoplay is blocked, playback is retried muted; use YouTube's volume control to turn on sound. If playback is still blocked, press play in the YouTube player.
Use the Chat and Playlist tabs to switch the side panel. The arrow beside the viewer count opens the participant list; the profile button changes your nickname and color. Enlarge video reduces outer margins while keeping the side panel on wide screens; on phones that panel is below the video.
Automatic playback waits until more than half of the player is visible in the active tab. Scrolling the player out of view or switching tabs pauses playback in your browser only. Opening a profile or room-settings dialog removes your player until you close it. When the player is visible again, it catches up with the room. These local pauses do not pause other participants, even when you are the host. Automatic queue progression waits for the host's visible player to reach the end.
Host controls and the queue
The host's play, pause and seek actions are shared. Guests follow the host; their local player changes are not room-wide commands. The host can select or remove queue entries and change guest permissions in Room settings.
The next queued video starts when the host's player reaches the end. If the host disconnects, the next connected participant by join order becomes host. The room currently allows up to 50 connected participants and 50 queue entries.
ViewTalk estimates the server clock using round-trip timing and corrects drift above roughly 1.8 seconds. Ads, buffering and different connections can still cause differences; it is not frame-perfect synchronization.
Content and browsers
Supported input is an individual YouTube video link: watch, youtu.be, Shorts, live or embed URLs. A playlist URL with a video ID adds that video only; it does not import a YouTube playlist. Spotify, Netflix, local files and separate audio streams are not supported.
Use a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari with JavaScript, WebSocket and YouTube embeds enabled. These are target browsers, not a guarantee for every version or in-app webview. Desktop and mobile Chromium layouts are checked; Safari and Firefox require device-specific validation.
Private, deleted, region-restricted, age-restricted and embedding-disabled videos may fail. Live streams can load, but seeking and group timing depend on the live window and are not guaranteed. The server uses the video ID with YouTube Data API v3 to check the title, embedding permission and made-for-kids status. Validation accepts only videos with embedding enabled and an explicit madeForKids: false. Made-for-kids videos, missing or unrecognized status, unavailable videos and failed API lookups are rejected.
This validation applies to loading or adding a video and to selecting or advancing queue entries. Successful checks may be reused from the room cache for up to 24 hours, so status is not continuously monitored. Videos already playing in existing rooms are not forcibly stopped when server validation is enabled. Older queue entries are checked on their next selection or advance; a failed check leaves the previous video and queue entries in place.
Two useful sessions
A study session: the host queues two public lecture videos, leaves guest skipping disabled and pauses at a worked example. Friends discuss the explanation in chat before the host resumes. Keep your own notes elsewhere because chat is temporary.
A music-video evening: enable guest additions so friends can queue official artist videos. Give guest skipping permission only if everyone agrees. Everyone watches the visible YouTube player; ViewTalk does not extract audio or provide offline listening.
Troubleshooting and limits
If a link is rejected, open the original video on YouTube and check the URL. If embedding is disabled or access is restricted, choose another permitted video; ViewTalk cannot remove those restrictions.
For a blank player or error 153, try a full browser, allow the YouTube domains and use the normal site URL. Browser privacy settings or extensions may prevent YouTube from verifying the embed. Do not disable essential security protections.
For lag, keep the room tab visible and check the connection. Reconnecting is automatic. If the room has expired after everyone left, create a new one; its chat and queue cannot be restored. Creating many rooms or sending messages very quickly triggers rate limits—wait before retrying.
There is no message archive, export, public feed, participant kick/block control or in-room reporting queue. Leave an unwanted conversation and use Contact for product or abuse reports. A password controls entry but does not stop participants from copying messages or forwarding invitations.
